Cell phones causing Brain Cancer?

It seems like just when you think you have protected your kids from the dangers in today’s world there is something new to worry about. I was watching the news the other day and they reported that studies show cell phones may cause brain cancer, according to a panel of experts reporting to the World Health Organization. It is very frustrating that I finally found a convenient and affordable way to keep track of my kids and it’s possibly hurting them. There has to be a solution to keeping my kids accessible while avoiding the possible risk of brain cancer.

Experts say, after reviewing dozens of studies that explored a possible link between cancer and hand held cell phones they were classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”. Cell phones were placed in the same category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform; all of which are hazardous. Cell phones do not give off as much radiation as a common X-ray, but they do give off radiation like a low-powered microwave. While it is concerning and a little scary, at least I can compare the exposure to something familiar and this gives me a better understanding of what these reports mean to me.

I did a little more research and found that children’s skulls and scalps are thinner so they are at a higher risk for the radiation and the radiation can penetrate deeper into the brains of kids and young adults. According to the chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, it divides their cells at a faster rate so the impact of radiation is greater. I have a friend who is an electrical engineer so I asked him some questions about this issue; he said between cell phones, Wi-Fi enabled computers and microwave ovens which we use in our daily life, due to the signal levels the microwave oven gives off the most radiation because it is transmitting a lot more energy. Although that gives me something else to worry about, because our family uses the microwave every day, he said we don’t have to give up our TV dinners and popcorn! Thankfully my friend gave me the solution I was looking for; he said that earpieces are the best way to stay safe while using a cell phone. The actual phone is what gets the signal from the cell tower, not the earpiece so you are not exposed to the radiation by using a wired or wireless earpiece. The wireless Bluetooth headsets use a different kind of technology to get the signal from the phone and the risk is almost nonexistent. This is good news because now my kids can keep their cell phones, I can reach them at any time and I don’t have to worry about them getting brain cancer from their phones as long as they are using their earpieces. Because today’s society relies so heavily on cell phones, using an earpiece is a very inexpensive preventive to the health issues that could arise from our every day cell phone use.
